Derek Evans In-Studio

A last minute opening allowed rising San Diego-based singer/songwriter Derek Evans to head to our studios over spring break to help launch our new in-studio video series. His simple tunes backed by his passionate voice have a sense of playful beauty that quickly explain how this individual has found himself playing the main stage at House of Blues and touring the nation. The last few months for Evans have seen a national tour and continued growth in terms of popularity.

My session with Evans allowed me to see just how passionate he is about his music. Right before we started recording, he asked me how long he should play for. I told him that it was up to him and he began to smile. Little did I know that after hitting record he’d play for almost an hour. I mixed up the audio from my favorite song of his (“Swami’s”) and used shots from our studio FlipCam HD and a MacBook iSight to create our first video in what will hopefully become a full series. The result isn’t too special, but the music that accompanies it certainly is. Check out the video above and, for those of you who want to listen to the entire set, it is posted down below.

Make sure to check out Evans and his friends Jakob Martin and Brodeeva this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the UC Forums at a free show sponsored by AS, USD Radio and STAND. Donations will be collected at the show to help with earthquake relief in Haiti and to help end the genocide in Darfur. Please come out to help these great causes and to hear some wonderful live music.
