Echosmith is a young and upcoming band that has really been drawing attention lately. When I say young, I really mean it. Their drummer, Graham, is 14. The lead singer is 16. The four of them are actually all brothers and sisters with the oldest being 20. Regardless of their ag,e they produce a mature sound that really brings you in, especially when seeing them perform live. The band is a pop-rock band with an indie feel out of Los Angeles, CA. They just completed their first Warped Tour and are releasing their debut album October 1st, 2013. I had the chance to sit down with the band before one of their shows last week to ask about both.

Question: How was your first Warped Tour?

Echosmith: Insane! Sydney (vocals): It was so fun and so crazy. We did not know what to expect going into it but I don’t think it could have gone any better. Noah (bass): It was a summer full of excitement and amazing shows. We got to meet a lot of awesome people; for sure a great time.

Q: Would you guys do it again?

E: Jamie (guitar): Yeah, we’d for sure do it again. We don’t really know what’s going on with us next year, but you know we’ll see what happens. It was for sure a great experience and we don’t regret it at all.

Q: What was it like opening for Owl City? You guys did some shows with them before Warped Tour as well right?

E: Jamie: Yeah, we toured with them earlier this year so it was really cool to go out with them again. We already knew him and all his crew. It was a really good time. Him and the crew are all really cool and nice guys. It was a really cool thing to be a part of.

Q: How about the bigger venues for those shows? How was that?

E: Jamie: It was fun. Especially coming off Warped Tour, it’s really fun to play inside and in theaters. Really refreshing. Noah: On Warped Tour it’s so hot outside. You have to work to draw people to the stage. These bigger shows felt more real and relevant. There’s a built in crowd there.

Q: You guys have a new album coming out soon. Tell me a little bit about it.

E: Sydney: I mean, we’re so proud of this album. We spent two years writing for it. I mean, we went through about 80 songs before narrowing it down to 12 for the record. It’s just crazy and we’re so proud of it. We all picked songs we loved and I think no song can be compared to another song on the record. Each track has it’s own thing. Sometimes you listen to records and you ask, “Wait, what was that song? Didn’t I just hear that track?”. I definitely did not want that for this band and I don’t think anybody else did either. We went into the recording process thinking that and also to be original too. So, yeah, I think that all the songs are in the same family, which is important as a band. We’re definitely proud of it and excited for people to hear more than three songs.

Q: With the new album, what’s in store for you guys’ future?

E: Noah: I’m just stoked for people to know the songs. It’s funny being an opening band cause we’re playing songs that still aren’t released, at least most of them. So we’re showing people these songs. It’ll be really cool to hear people singing all our songs, not just three.

Q: Will you guys be touring with this album?

E: Sydney: Yeah, we have some things for the rest of the year that aren’t announced yet. We’ll definitely be touring the rest of this year and into next year while promoting the album like crazy.

Echosmith’s new album comes out October 1st, 2013. If you pre-order the album now, you get three tracks free. It’s easy to think they’re one of those teen pop-rock bands but they’re not. The more you listen, the more you realize this band has some real talent and an alternative sound. I definitely recommend checking them out and catching their live performance.
