Toreros sweep Pepperdine with walk-off win

Designated hitter Thomas Luevano led off the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday with a walk. Four runs and two outs later, he strode to the plate again, the bases loaded, needing only to get on base to finish the inning he started and make the Toreros walk-off winners. Luevano didn’t need to swing his bat. The first pitch from Pepperdine reliever Dane Morrow hit USD’s slugger square in the back, sending Luevano to first and the Toreros into delirium.

Toreros miss chances to stun Cougs in Provo

The Toreros could have stolen one, even two games from BYU last weekend, if they had played perfect softball. All three of the Cougars’ runs in game one came from USD errors, and the Toreros had a 3-1 lead early in game two. But perfection is difficult to achieve, and San Diego came up short as BYU swept the series to remain unbeaten in West Coast Conference play.

USD tramples Stetson

The University of San Diego’s football team dominated the winless Stetson Hatters on senior night at home on Saturday. Despite being heavily favored to win the contest, 3-1 USD got off to a slow start against the Hatters. Despite trailing 3-10 at the end of the first half, the rest of the game was all USD. The Toreros held Stetson scoreless for the entire second half, while proceeding to score 31 points to win the game.

Santa Clara spoils senior day

On the day when USD celebrated their seniors, it was Santa Clara’s seniors who celebrated. Veteran Bronco forward Oladayo Thomas scored a pair of goals and fellow senior Juan O’Neill added a third to earn the visitors a 3-0 victory and fourth place in the West Coast Conference in Sunday’s season finale. The loss dropped the Toreros to fifth, and was USD’s worst result in WCC play.

USD topples LMU in conference opener

The University of San Diego women’s soccer team visited the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday for each team’s West Coast Conference opener. USD recently suffered heavy losses after the Pepperdine Waves overcame them 4-1 at home and No. 4 UCLA defeated them 3-0 in Los Angeles, but were set to move past these non-conference losses and get back on track for the start of a new season.

Toreros’ Sunday rally rescues one win from three against Aztecs

In the middle of the sixth inning of Sunday’s series finale between the University of San Diego and their neighbors and rivals San Diego State University, the visiting Aztecs looked well on their way to sweeping the Toreros. Leading 12-3 and with two wins — 14-7 on Friday and 19-18 after 10 innings on Saturday — already in their pockets, all SDSU had to do was keep USD’s bats quiet and maybe tack on a couple more runs. They did neither of those things
