Greek for a week

“Of all the many different and exciting events hosted at University of San Diego during the school year, one of my favorites is Greek Week. As a non-Greek student, I will admit that I am deeply fascinated by the USD Greek world, particularly the events that took place during Greek Week.

For those of you who are new to USD, this is a week filled with various competitions and fund-raising events hosted by the Greek chapters who call USD home.

By far the most popular event of Greek Week is skit night. These skits are a favorite of both Greeks and non-Greeks because they always end up appearing more like ridiculous choreographed dances than actual skits. Each of the individual skits culminates in a point system that ultimately contributes to a chapter winning Greek Week.

To the non-assuming student, most of the events that took place last week either didn’t matter or had very little impact on their daily lives, which is a reasonable assumption.

However, to my roommates who are both involved in fraternities and to many of my friends, Greek Week was one of the most important times of the year.

Greek Week means different things to different people, but the importance of it cannot be downplayed. It focuses the competitive Greeks on one united goal, winning. But Greek Week is more than a competition. It is a chance for the USD community to socialize and bond, and most importantly it is a chance for non-Greeks to not pay dues and still reap almost all the benefits. As for myself, I would rather spend the dues associated with being Greek on a pair of True Religion jeans.

This is why during the Fall semester I consider myself Greek for a week. For some students, the Greek system is like the perfect pair of jeans that many refuse to live without.

As for myself, I would prefer to live vicariously through my roommates and friends involved in the Greek system and buy those True Religions. “
