While many students rested or went on vacation during spring break, the work didn’t stop for USD athletes. Men’s and women’s tennis played in key matches against UCLA and Princeton, baseball played in their first road series against Grand Canyon University, and softball hosted the San Diego Tournament at the USD Softball complex.

Baseball and softball returned to the USD campus over the weekend, with baseball winning three out of four against the University of Oregon and softball going 3-2 in the Torero Classic. Women’s tennis continued their winning streak on Friday and Saturday, and men’s and women’s basketball began to wrap up their regular seasons.

Toreros sweep Pepperdine with walk-off win

Designated hitter Thomas Luevano led off the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday with a walk. Four runs and two outs later, he strode to the plate again, the bases loaded, needing only to get on base to finish the inning he started and make the Toreros walk-off winners. Luevano didn’t need to swing his bat. The first pitch from Pepperdine reliever Dane Morrow hit USD’s slugger square in the back, sending Luevano to first and the Toreros into delirium.
