The walls in the quaint venue filled with the crowd’s all-consuming enthusiasm and eagerness as MØ’s Forever Neverland Tour kicked off. On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Danish singer, songwriter, and record producer Karen Marie Aagaard Ørsted Andersen, better known as MØ, astonished the San Diego crowd. Electrified by her performance, the audience belted the lyrics to her top hits, including “Nights With You,” “Kamikaze,” “Don’t Leave,” and many others as she danced her way around The Observatory stage and into the crowd
MØ’s exquisite voice coupled with her incessant energy intoxicated her fans, leaving an everlasting and awe-inspiring gaze in their eyes as they swayed to the beat of the music. Her delicate, yet powerful vocals along with her astounding range commanded the attention of the room. Even the security guards couldn’t help but to move to MØ’s upbeat sound.
The electronic pop artist’s album “Forever Neverland” explores MØ’s lifelong dream of living in California. That being said, the crowd was undoubtedly invigorated by her passionate voice as she infused the room with her aspirations. The fantasy of living in Hollywood and the city’s obsession with fame and youth further reflects her euphoric lyrics which strive to harmonize the city’s charm, along with its undeniable superficiality. MØ’s many performances, often away from the stage and in the heart of the crowd, complement her venture to The Golden State, as well as her immediate connection with her fans.
Throughout the night, MØ never failed to amaze the extensive audience gathered in The Observatory. As she sung “Mercy,” MØ challenged herself to play the keyboard, an instrument she has never played before. Her album “Forever Neverland” is ultimately about stepping outside of her comfort zone and traveling across the world to move to California, a place that is completely foreign to her. Similarly, MØ exhibits her remarkable ability to gracefully play the keyboard, as well as her capacity to perform while parading through the audience. Essentially, she manifested her bold character and palpable talent with the release of “Forever Neverland.”
The artist doesn’t just put on a performance, she pours out her heart and soul. Her compassion and appreciation toward her band lit up the room as she sang “Happy Birthday” to her guitarist, despite the fact that he “hates attention.” MØ’s break from her set list to acknowledge her guitarist was genuine, and mirrored the rest of her concert.
MØ’s intentions were explicit as she affirmed her commitment to being at one with everyone in the audience. Correspondingly, she was extremely enthusiastic in her immense gratitude for her supporters.
“I think it’s so amazing that I could come from the other side of the planet to a place where I hardly know anybody and yet feel like I know you all already,” MØ said. “I think it’s really awesome that you can actually feel a connection right now, here in this room.”
MØ made a constant effort to bridge the gap between the stage and all of her supporters gathered in general admission on the floor.
Sophomore Sabrina Alterman attended MØ’s show and admired her performance.
“I could tell MØ cared about her fans and wanted to show them that she loves and trusts them,” Alterman said. “It was a personal touch that sets her apart from other artists that I’ve seen. When she sang and danced in the crowd, there were no security guards with her. That made her come off as a normal person. It raised the positivity and lighthearted energy in the whole room.”
It came as no surprise that MØ left with one of her top hits titled “Final Song” to properly finish off the night. The crowd went wild, waving their hands back and forth, and singing along with the artist to the final song. Although the crowd hoped that MØ would continue to perform, they showed their admiration for all the talent she shared, as well as the everlasting vivacity she brought to her Forever Neverland Tour in San Diego.
