: The Rarities
Label: Columbia Records
Release Date: October 2, 2020

Mariah Carey released her 17th studio album, “The Rarities,” on Oct. 2, 2020. The album contains 32 songs and totals to two hours and sixteen minutes. The album is a compilation of unreleased songs from her past records and B-side songs, which contain the full “Live at the Tokyo Dome” concert from her 1996 “Daydream” World Tour, Carey’s first concert in Japan. The album also contains one feature from the talented Ms. Lauryn Hill, in the song “Save The Day.”

The album begins with songs that Carey has recorded for her past sixteen albums, but never ended up releasing. However, these songs display the same amount of talent and range Carey delivers her listeners with in all of her past music.

The album begins with the song “Here We Go Around Again – 1990.” This song is about being in a relationship with a man who has other priorities, but always comes back with the same
apologies and excuses which are accepted with open arms. It is about going in circles, around and around again. Although the message is a tough message about problems that need solving, the song is very upbeat and tends to make the listener want to get up and dance.

Carey slows it down with the song “Slipping Away – 1996.” This song shows off the range in Carey’s voice and her angelic sound. This song is about one person fighting for the relationship, while the other person is slowly drifting further away. The song “Save The Day” featuring Lauryn Hill includes two powerhouse female vocalists. The song begins slower with Carey’s soft, raspier vocals. It then introduces Hill and the song’s tempo gets faster. Carey shows off her high-pitched tone as well as her softer, sweet tone. The song samples part of The Refugees’ famous song, “Killing Me Softly.”

Carey is very particular about her music, which is what makes her such a strong artist. She works on each song, helping to write and produce them. This album takes listeners through the many years of Carey’s talent. It starts out in 1990 with unreleased music and travels through all the years ending with a new song for 2020. The album allows the listener to see the immense
growth and consistent work she has produced for the past 30 years. We hear slower songs, songs that make listeners want to get up and dance, and songs that individuals and fans can relate to. We hear her softer voice, her high-pitched tone, and all the range in between. Carey’s unique sound is highlighted throughout the album. For those who have never listened to Mariah Carey before, this album is the perfect way to get a hear the variety Carey delivers as an artist.
